Historians agree that the founder was Don Asencio Rodríguez in 1750.
Around 1760 some ranches stand out in the same place where today there is the town known as ´´El Antiguo Rosario´´. Some of the most important neighbors in these valleys met in a meeting on July 15, 1771, in order to formalize the creation of the parish. In view of the importance that its inhabitants took, they requested the Spanish monarch Carlos IV to grant it the title of Villa.
Consequently, on May 18, 1792, the parish of Nuestra Señora del Rosario was granted the title of ´´noble, faithful and courageous Villa´´ by Royal Decree.
Villa del Rosario contributed many great men where General Francisco de Paula Santander stands out, a man of arms and laws, whose work in the war and in the Republic allowed him to be valued as the brain of public administration and democratic management.
