The site of Tarmatambo, is located in the city center of the same name, on a high plain, 5 km. from the city of Tarma, and next to the road that goes up from the Tarma valley towards Jauja, north-south direction.
According to researchers Ramiro Matos and J. Parsons (1978) in the late horizon period (1200d-1.450dC), there were two Inca settlements in Tarma: Tarmatambo, south of the city of Tarma and another settlement that lost its original name, but which was in the lower town of Leticia, northwest of Tarma. They claim that these settlements were destroyed mainly by the modern occupation, but they had distinct characteristics of Inca architecture, besides abundant ceramics. They claim that they are located on the route of the Tahuantinsuyo Royal Road and that the Inca settlement pattern consisted of rectangular, circular buildings arranged in long lines along the sloping hillsides.
