On the northern side of the Serra da Estrela, the castle is the ex-libris of the settlement, whose foundation is attributed to the legendary Viriato, who would have been born here. Along with that of Linhares and that of Celorico, that of Folgosinho comprised a defensive triangle of the Mondego river valley.
Background
The primitive human occupation of the sites of the castle and the village dates back to two pre-Roman castros. No information on possible subsequent occupations was found.
The medieval castle
At the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, King Sancho I (1185-1211) granted him a charter in 1187, in view of his strategic position and the need for settlement and defense of the region. His successor, D. Afonso II (1211-1223), confirmed his charter (1217). Some authors report that D. Dinis (1279-1325) repeated the act.
In the 16th century, D. Manuel I (1495-1521) granted him New Foral (1512). In this period, being the town and its term, by virtue of its forais, considered as Land of El - King, they had as donatarios, the marquesses of Arronches, the dukes of Lafões and the counts of Miranda do Corvo. It was still a Comenda of the Order of Christ.
Features
Raised in a dominant position at a height of nine hundred and thirty-three meters above sea level, the castle was erected with white-pink quartz stone, which gives it a singular beauty.
The Castle of Folgosinho, in Beira Alta, is located in the village and parish of Folgosinho, Gouveia County, Guarda District, Portugal.
In the twentieth century, its castle was classified as Property of Public Interest by Decree published on March 25, 1936. Currently well preserved, it is a regional tourist attraction.
