Accessible from Karmelitská street, the Vrtba garden is one of the most beautiful baroque gardens in Prague. As soon as you pass through the arch decorated with an athletic Hercules, you will pass to another, intimate and bright world, full of works of art and with panoramic views of the Malá Strana quarter.
This baroque garden on the Italian-type terrace was built between 1715 - 1720 by the highest burgrave of Prague, Count Jan Josef Vrtba.
The garden is the fruit of the work of the Prague Maximilián Kaňka and the collaboration of renowned artists of the time, such as the sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun and the painter Václav Vavřinec Reiner. Kaňka managed to turn this small area into a space with a grandiose and very dynamic composition.
At the bottom we will discover a lake decorated with an angel riding a sea monster, a nursery and a bucolic earthly room. The walls of this room evoke ancient ruins invaded by vegetation, where Bacchus, Venus, Adonis and Ceres celebrate the pleasure of country life. Over the arch, a pergola marks a scene of allegories of the sciences and the arts.
The garden extends in trompe-l'oeil to accentuate the depth, with stairs, walls and flowers. The different levels house allegorical sculptures representing the Gods of Olympus. Be sure to climb up to the rotunda at the top of the marina-inspired garden ... a breathtaking sight will reward your efforts with a wonderful view of the Malá Strana ceilings, from which domes, bells and towers emerge.

April - October: 10h-18h.
Attention! The garden is closed during the winter, from November to March.
